The geropsychiatric department (geriatric psychiatry) of Desert Springs Hospital is now contracted with United Behavioral Health (UBH) for inpatient behavioral health needs for adults 55 and older who are experiencing emotional or cognitive problems.
UBH is a behavioral health network accessed by many United Healthcare Insurance plans including, but not limited to, United AARP Medicare Advantage, United AARP Medicare Focus-OptumCare (NV), United Healthcare, United Healthcare Options PPO, and United AARP Medicare Advantage-Healthcare Partners of Nevada.
Referrals to the geropsychiatric specialty care unit are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by calling 702-894-5508, and can be accepted from patients themselves or their loved ones, physicians, emergency departments, nursing homes and assisted-living facilities.
Older adults who are experiencing an acute change in behavior may also be assessed and treated by an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, therapists, mental health technicians and case managers, for a medical condition that could be affecting their well-being. Among the conditions considered are:
- A diagnosis of early and mid-stage dementia that renders the patient unable to negotiate their current environment, including dementia with depression, psychosis or other co-morbid psychiatric disorder.
- Cognitive limitations resulting in psychological and/or behavioral impairment.
- Being a potential danger to themselves or others because of their mental condition.
- Acute disabling symptoms, bizarre behavior, impaired reality, acute stress reaction, complicated grief, acute mania and severe depression associated with suicidal ideations, intent or plans.
