Dissolving Heart Stent Treats Coronary Artery Disease
Coronary artery disease is the most common type of heart disease and is the leading cause of death of both men and women in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center offers a new and advanced treatment for coronary artery disease. The FDA-approved Absorb™ Bioresorbable Vascular Scaffold System opens clogged arteries to restore blood flow and then gradually dissolves in the body.
Unlike a traditional metal stent, the Absorb stent is made of a naturally dissolving material, similar to dissolving sutures. It is the only fully dissolving heart stent for treating coronary artery disease and reduces the risk of future blockages that can occur with metal stents.
The Absorb stent disappears completely in about three years, except for two pairs of tiny metallic markers that remain in the artery to allow physicians to see where the device was placed. By contrast, metal stents are permanent implants.
The Absorb stent offers immediate relief from coronary artery disease and provides other benefits as well. It allows the artery to pulse and flex naturally and also makes it easier for doctors to offer additional interventions in the future if needed.
